The mission of The Cake
Angels is to prayerfully provide a
personalized, home baked and decorated birthday cake to the ill,
elderly, and others in need.
What
would a birthday be without cake? It is so simple, yet so
meaningful. A childs first birthday is vitally important to
his or her family. New parents would never dream of letting it pass
by without a cake to commemorate the occasion. And so it goes
throughout our lives. Each year we celebrate, and we remember one
anothers birthdays through the simple act of lighting the candles,
singing the "Happy Birthday song, and cutting the cake.
As we blow out the candles, we not only make a wish for our
future, but, especially as we grow older, we also think back to birthdays past. It is a traditional act that makes us feel that
we are special and that our lives are important.
Even the young children
seem to instinctively know
what
type of cakes they want on
their special days. They start forming their ideas, sometimes six
months in advance, and wait with great anticipation for that glorious
day of celebration. Whether it be a vanilla cake shaped like a teddy
bear or a chocolate cake with rich chocolate frosting, we all, in the spirit of a child, have a particular fondness for one type
of cake or
another. We sometimes happily recall that one particular cake
from our childhood birthday party, and who doesnt light up when
they see a layer cake dripping with pink icing?
The message behind the cake
is always the same: Celebrating life - no matter what birthday we are
coming up on -- is essential. All this being true, the last
birthday of a persons life should not only not be forgotten,
but it
should also be an expression of the same love that was shared on his or her
very first birthday. This is the mission of our volunteer cake
service, and prayer is a
vital component of this expression of love.
Let love be sincere;
hate what is evil, hold on to what is good; love one another with
mutual affection; anticipate one another in showing honor. Do
not grow slack in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.
Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, persevere in prayer.
Contribute to the needs of the holy ones, exercise hospitality.
- Romans 12, 9-13
Yes, our clients receive a
beautifully decorated and delicious cake to honor their day, but it is
more than just baking on our part. We have been given a
unique opportunity to personally offer prayers for those who are
suffering. Using such prayers as "The
Chaplet of Divine Mercy" (see also "59beads"),
we pray for those we help so that they may receive Gods grace as
they face their illnesses and, possibly, their deaths.
Our Lord said to Saint
Faustina:
"Encourage souls to
say the Chaplet which I have given you
Whoever will recite
it will receive great mercy at the hour of death
When they
say the chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between
My Father and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the
merciful Savior... I desire to grant unimaginable graces to
those souls who trust in My mercy
through the Chaplet you
will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My
will."

We remember. We celebrate. We
believe.
